Stewart Judo Academy (SJA) is a British Judo affiliated, family-run club founded by Seoul 1988 Olympic bronze medallist Dennis Stewart and Tokyo 2020 Paralympic silver medallist Elliot Stewart.
Today, SJA is run by international athletes and England Judo coaches Max Stewart, Pan American bronze medallist and Grand Prix champion, and Lucy Renshall, two-time Olympian and former world number one. SJA is also supported by coaches Lewis Stewart, former Team GB member and Jemima Yeats-Brown, Olympian and double Commonwealth medallist.
Our mission is to give back to the sport by creating an inclusive environment that provides equal opportunities for everyone to achieve their individual goals and reach their full potential in judo.
We deliver high-quality judo classes for all ages and abilities — from complete beginners to elite competitors. Whether training for fun, fitness, or international competition, SJA offers a pathway for every judoka to develop and succeed.
Judo tots will help introduce judo to children in a fun way through play that will help them develop their self-confidence, allow them to master basic movement skills, such as balance and co-ordination in a safe environment. By introducing judo to children in a way that focuses on learning essential skills that will provide the child with a sense of achievement while developing their physical literacy, giving them a start in developing an active lifestyle.
Our Junior Judo classes are designed to help children develop both physically and mentally in a fun, structured, and supportive environment. Through judo, children will:
- Develop discipline and focus
- Improve physical fitness and coordination
- Learn practical self-defence skills
- Build essential life skills such as respect, teamwork, and perseverance
- Grow in confidence both on and off the mat
- Set and achieve goals through our grading system and competitions
Whether a child’s goal is to compete, grade, or simply enjoy learning judo, our Junior Class provides a strong foundation for every young judoka to thrive.
Class 2 is open to anyone aged 13 and above, whether you’re a beginner looking to get started or a developing judoka ready to compete. This class offers a focused and energetic environment that encourages every participant to challenge themselves, learn new skills, and progress at their own pace.
Sessions are designed to develop strong technical foundations, while also introducing tactical, physical, and mental preparation for competition. Through regular training, participants will:
- Learn and refine key judo techniques
- Build strength, coordination, and confidence
- Develop discipline, focus, and respect for others
- Gain valuable experience through optional competition pathways
- Work towards personal goals, from fitness to high performance
Whether your aim is to learn judo for enjoyment, fitness, and confidence, or to push yourself towards competitive success, this class provides the structure, support, and challenge to help you achieve it.
Our adult classes are open to anyone aged 16 and above. Whatever your level, whether you’re a complete beginner or an experienced judoka - you are welcome to join. There is no age too old to start judo.
Through our sessions, you can expect to experience positive changes both mentally and physically, all while learning new skills and having fun in a supportive environment.
